Is there parking available?

The Residence does not have parking facilities. There are, however, parking lots in the surrounding area at market rates, and public transportation is close by (the MBTA, subway).

Is the area safe for walking in the evening?

The Berkeley Residence is located in Boston's South End neighborhood, one of the more prominent areas of the city. The neighborhood is predominantly residential with well lit streets and is walking distance to many restaurants and shops.

Is the Berkeley central to tourist attractions? Museums? Historical sites?

The Residence is located within walking distance to several shopping areas, a diverse array of restaurants, and historic Boston neighborhoods. Art and science museums are only a few subway stops away. Most of the Front Desk Staff are Boston natives and enjoy playing tourist guide.

How do I get to the Berkeley from the airport when I am driving?

  • Follow the signs to Boston and the Sumner Tunnel
  • At the end of the tunnel, turn right and go up the ramp to expressway 93
  • Exit the expressway at the second exit onto Storrow Drive
  • Stay in the left lane, there are many curves
  • Exit Storrow Drive at the first exit (Arlington Street)
  • At the end of the exit is a traffic light, turn right onto Beacon Street
  • On Beacon Street go two blocks and turn left onto Clarendon Street
  • Drive down Clarendon Street for 8 blocks, passing the John Hancock Tower, and passing the YWCA Boston headquarters building, and through Columbus Avenue
  • Turn Left onto Appleton Street and go 1 block. The Berkeley Residence is at the corner of Appleton and Berkeley Streets

How do I get to the Berkeley from the airport on the subway?

The Airport Station is on the Blue Line. Take the subway inbound to the State Street stop and transfer to the Orange Line. Take an outbound train four stops to Back Bay Station. Get off at Back Bay Station and walk through the terminal to Clarendon Street. Walk down Clarendon Street, crossing Columbus Avenue, and continue on for 2 blocks. Turn left onto Appleton Street. Walk down Appleton Street 1 block. The Berkeley Residence is at the corner of Berkeley and Appleton Streets.

How do I get to the Berkeley from the South Station train and bus terminals?

The South Station subway stop is on the Red Line. Take an inbound train to the Downtown Crossing subway stop. Transfer over to the Orange Line and take an outbound train four stops to Back Bay Station. Get off at Back Bay Station and walk through the terminal to Clarendon Street. Walk down Clarendon Street, crossing Columbus Avenue, and continue on for 2 blocks. Turn left onto Appleton Street. Walk down Appleton Street 1 block. The Berkeley Residence is at the corner of Berkeley and Appleton Streets.


Accommodation Information

Do the rooms have telephones?

The rooms do not have telephones, but the Front Desk Staff will buzz your room when you have an incoming call and your call will be forwarded to a hall house phone near your room. If you are not in your room at the time of the call, the Staff will take a message. The hall house phones are also availiable for outgoing calls. If you are a long-term resident, you may make arrangements with the phone company to install your own phone.

Are meals available?

For long-term residents, meals are included in the rent. For overnight guests, a full breakfast is included in the price of the room: eggs, cereal, toast, fruit and all the coffee you can drink! A dinner ticket may be purchased for $6.50. The dinner fare is a choice of entrees (including vegetarian), salad bar, and dessert. A menu is posted for perusing.

Does The Berkeley provide irons?

There are irons available at the Front Desk.

Do the rooms have a bathroom?

The rooms do not have private bathrooms. There are two large bathrooms on every floor, each with several showers and stalls.

Do the rooms have televisions?

The rooms do not have televisions, but the Residence does have a TV Room that is open 24 hours. The Berkeley also has a Video Room.
